type='text'>Podcasts

One of my MANY New Years Resolutions is to be a better blogger.

So, I thought I'd start by telling you about a project I've been working on for a couple of months.

A few years ago, I started podcasting with two other music teachers, Carol Broos and Brenda Muench. I had met both of these ladies online, first on Plurk, and then I followed them on Twitter. We talked virtually for about six months before we met in person at the IMEA Conference in 2009. We began a podcast show called "Musically and Technically Speaking" (MATS), which we did for about 2 years before life and internet connections got in the way.

Carol approached both of us regarding a new show for the website EdReach. This new podcast is called the aRTs Roundtable, and we discuss issues in arts education, including technology, PLNs, and creativity in the classroom. It has been an awesome experience so far, and I've enjoyed recording each week.

You can actually subscribe to our podcast through iTunes (iTunes - Podcasts - EdReach » aRTs Roundtable by EdReach- The Education Media Network). You can also visit our page on EdReach here: ARTs Roundtable | EdReach

It has been a wonderful experience to discuss issues in arts I was lucky enough to be chosen for the first-year rollout. I was also selected as a SMARTboard Trainer...once we are trained, we are expected to help and train our colleagues/coworkers/team members, even those who don't have a board. It's an exciting time, but also a bit of a stressful time. I JUST finished my curriculum for the middle school, and am now trying to create lessons using the SMARTboard. I'm hoping to find lessons online that others have created as well.

It's scary to believe that the summer is already over and we're gearing up for another year of teaching/learning. I've had an excellent summer and am glad that I was able to have a little bit of downtime between grad school and the start of the type='html'>I've been in grad school for 4 years now, taking classes during the summer months and on weekends during the school year. I've spent hours in front of the computer typing up lesson plans, thesis papers, assessments, curriculum maps, strategies for reaching all learners, and arrangements of my own music. I've spent many sleepless nights working on homework, trying to get my computer to cooperate when it decided to eat a paper, and working on projects.

And, it all ends on Saturday.

It's been quite an adventure, and these past three years (while I've been in "residency") have been particularly enlightening. I've learned a lot about myself over the pat 3 years, including just how much I can handle, that my breaking point is a lot farther away from what it used to be, and that I can do pretty much anything I can put my mind into. I've discovered that I really should be singing soprano, not alto. I've discovered that I, as a former band director, do understand vocal and general music, and that I've build a pretty amazing program at my school. I've learned about vocal health, choosing choral repertoire, incorporating technology in my classroom, APA style formatting, curriculum development, engaging students, etc. etc. etc. I know WAY too much about APA formatting. ;)

It's been a great four years. I've met a lot of truly amazing musicians and people from literally all over the world, from Australia to China to the Bahamas, not to mention people all over the USA. Thanks to social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Plurk, I'll be able to stay connected to many of these new friends for years to come.

But it still all ends Saturday. And while I'm excited to finally be able to put the student cap to rest (at least for a little while), I know I'm going to miss it terribly.

So now what am I going to do to fill up my summer months?

Week 5

Hello, week 5! This is traditionally the week where everyone shuts down due to the stress and strain of being in an incredibly intense 6-week graduate program. There's much weeping and gnashing of teeth involved. Just kidding...mostly!

It's been a crazy few days. Last Saturday, I had to be downtown bright and early for the comprehensive exam (I chose to take a 3 hour essay test instead of making a portfolio). Of course, as luck would have it, this was the morning (like several others) where my CAR WOULDN'T START! Yup. My car decided to have a hissy fit that morning. Luckily, I was leaving early, and had enough time to call my parents and have them bring over my mom's car (since mine was blocking my husband's and I was quickly running out of time). Of course, 5 minutes after I left, my car started. Sigh.

The actual test went really well. 50 minutes goes by VERY fast when you're frantically trying to answer 2 essay questions. It was a little hairy for the first test, but once I realized how much I needed to keep an eye on time, the second and third section went much better. It was entertaining watching everyone in the room shaking their writing hands furiously throughout and after each section of the test. I'm feeling very good overall about the test. If, for some reason, I royally messed up one or more sections, I just have to meet with the grader of that portion of the test and discuss it, and if necessary, retake it.

Week 5 is where everyone has to buckle down. For those of us lucky enough to be graduating this year, it also marked Poster Night! I'll be writing more about that one later, as I have lots of pics to share with it! It was a great night, and I really feel like a HUGE weight has been lifted...my Master's Project is officially done. Everything has been turned in, and I'm one step closer to graduating!

If I can just get my homework done, I am good to go for graduation next Saturday! Over the next 10 days, I have to make a semester-long assessment for beginning and advanced middle school choir, finish my blog for Gower, finish my repertoire list for Choral methods, and make a power point showing form. Any takers? Anyone? Anyone at all? No? Fine, I'll do my own homework.
<img width='1' height='1' interesting around here. This morning's Instructional Design class was a perfect example of this. All of the students were incredibly slap happy, and our poor instructor just about lost his mind. Yeah, we took advantage of his ADD as well. Highly entertaining for all around!

Besides everyone becoming completely loopy, week 4 is when people start to crack under pressure. The homework load greatly increases, and doesn't let up until the end of week 6. The second concert is this week, which just adds to the fun, especially when everyone is trying frantically to get their work done at the same time.

For students who are graduating (myself included), portfolios are due this week. Comp exams (for those of us who didn't want to make a portfolio) are this week. Papers are being revised and edited at a frantic pace so that they'll be ready to turn in one last time. Posters are being made (or printed digitally) and prepared for Poster Night.

So, in general, things are getting very interesting and VERY intense around here! The only thing more entertaining (well, at least for the professors and the casual observer) is week 5. That's when the nervous twitch begins...<div now. I learned how to reverse a track, which will be a lot of fun to do with my 7th grade students as we study Rock & Roll music in class...hello Beatles! I also learned how to remove the vocals from a track (well, mostly), which will help when I need to remove certain words from a song for our dance line group, or when they need a karaoke-type track for the variety show, and you can't find one on iTunes (it HAS happened before). If you'd like to know how to do this, let me know and I'll try to make a tutorial for it. I have a feeling I'll be doing this anyways for some of the teachers at my school...that way THEY know how to do it and I don't have to do everyone's work!
I love having all sorts of new tools and tricks at my I have four more weeks to go before I am official a "Master of Music Education." Ok, maybe not that EXACT title, but it sounds cool! I know my husband will be VERY happy when this is over...I've been slightly neglectful of him lately. It's a good thing he's pretty self-sufficient and can take care of himself (mostly).

Friday also marked the day that I turned in my Master's Project. I will admit, there were a few moments when I wondered if I would EVER get this project finished! I had an additional moment of "WHAT" when, at about 12:30 in the morning, I seem to have lost my project. After a few moments of freaking out, I was able to recover a backed up copy (minus about an hour's worth of revisions). PHEW! I have no idea what I had done, but, being 12:30 in the morning, I didn't have my head on enough to realize that I had saved it in about 10 places. That, and when I looked at that original, messed up 12:30 am copy last night...it looked fine. Maybe my brain was over-tired...or the mere thought of having to start over just put me in a whole new place of panic.

So, here's my life in the next 4 weeks.

Week 3: not much specifically. Mostly homework. And studying. And making a poster.
Week 4: Keep making a poster. Comp Exam! YIKES!
Week 5: Turn in final copy of Master's Project. Present project during Poster Night. This is also the dreaded week 5 where everyone goes bonkers from the stress. It's not a rumor, it's true. I've experienced it.
Week 6: BREATHE. I graduate at the end of this! I'm a Master of Music Ed!

Test, test, test

This is not an emergency. My students sing, play recorders, guitars, and percussion instruments, learn about music around the world, compose their own music, and explore their own musical interests and tastes. They are exposed to tools such as GarageBand, Audacity, NoteFlight, MuseScore, SmartMusic, and much more.

Music has always been an important part of my life. I have been singing as long as I can remember. I've been playing clarinet since I was 9 years old, and have added many other instruments to that list since then. I currently play in a community band and am hoping to get back into singing in a community choir. I love to surround myself with music, whether it's creating my own or just listening to music while I'm working around the house or in the garden.

I am currently a graduate student at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, IL. All around the state, hundreds of music teachers take a day or two off of work and meet up in Peoria, IL for a special event...

called IMEA.

This year marks my fourth consecutive year attending the conference. It's always a fun time, because you're in a building full of people who UNDERSTAND YOU. They understand your passion for solfege and the excitement that comes when your 4th grade clarinet player finally crosses the break...and they know what that means. They understand the struggles you face of scheduling and trying to cram way too many lessons in the day because you want to see all of your students. They get it...because they live it. Now, don't get me wrong...I'm in an amazing district where music is greatly valued and appreciated...but it's still nice to be able to speak the language of music with others without having someone looking at you like you're from another planet.

It's also nice being able to reconnect with friends that you don't get to see face-to-face very often. We spend so much time texting, emailing, reading each other's blogs, writing on each other's facebook walls, responding to plurks or tweets that we almost feel like we know each other...but it's wonderful to actually TALK to the person across from the table and see what they actually look like in 3-D. Each year, I'm amazed at how many more people I have to "find" that I've reconnected with somehow/somewhere.

And then, of course, there are the sessons and the exhibit halls. Sessions talking about integration, teaching across the curriculum, sight-singing, inclusion for special needs children, using technology in the classroom, helping the middle school boy through the changing voice (a JOYOUS time for all middle school choir directors!), and everything else under the sun. The exhibits are full of shiny new instruments, music waiting to be played or sung, new books to help remind us of what we intrinsically know as educators and some things we have never thought of.

And every year I come home exhausted, yet excited and full of new ideas that I can hardly wait to show my kids. I come home with more catalogs than I know what to do with. And of course I come home with bags of "gourmet lollipops" for my kids to try to earn as a special reward. This year, I also came home with one of these: http://www.wengercorp.com/Teach/footNOTES.html. It's a rug...a very large rug. And I won it in a drawing that the Wenger peeps hold every year. My friend Steve almost always wins a stand...but I came home with a rug that I have to somehow get into my car so I can take it to school tomorrow morning and show my kids.

So tomorrow I return to life and school, hopefully with some new tips and tricks up my sleeve and a new energy and focus for the remainder of the school year. I'm also more energized to get back to work blogging and putting myself out there to connect with other music educators, as well as getting to work to build my website that I've been dreaming about and planning for who-knows-how-long. I want to do my part to contribute to my profession...there are some pretty big shoes out there to fill.

Life is good.

Things I've Learned from Graduate School (as of July 18th)

These are in no particular order, and I'm sure that this list will change with each summer I am in this program, and even after I've had a chance to reflect on everything I have experienced this summer.

1. Sleep as much as you can, because there will be weeks in which you get little of it.
2. Work ahead of schedule as much as possible. There are times where you have little on your plate, and others where you feel as if there are not enough hours in the day to accomplish everything. PLAN AHEAD!
3. Start the research paper on day one...don't procrastinate as I did!
4. Find a little bit of time every day for yourself. Even if you only get 30 minutes, take some time to be you. It is especially important on those days where you feel overwhelmed and swamped.
5. Eat healthy. Drink lots of water.
6. Listen to the advice of those who have gone before you and who have more experience. If I would have listened to Brenda, Carol, and Lornetta, I would have taken voice lessons instead of piano, and would have taken public transportation more.
7. Take public transportation! Yes, it's nice having a car on campus, but it's definitely more relaxing to sit on a train instead of in traffic! Plus, you can read on the train. You shouldn't read while driving on the expressway.
8. Lean on your friends/family/significant others. They always want to support and help you in any way that they can! Even if that means begging them to listen to you vent for 15 minutes, helping you clean our car, or entertaining your cats/kids/dog, it's the little things. Just be prepared to bake for them or return the favor!
9. Make friends! You will need that support group, not to mention that core group to bounce ideas off of each other. Who knows...maybe you'll even end up on the same train! You're all in this together, you know!
10. Take time to reflect on what you've learned and how you're going to apply this knowledge. It can be overwhelming if you wait until the program is over to look back...make notes, write a journal, use post-its, code...whatever system works for you!

As I said, I know this list will change, so I'll add to it once I finish school (in a week, wow!).

What other pieces of advice would you offer to someone in graduate school?

An Introduction

My name is Jennifer, aka Clarinet_Jen in various communities, and I have been a lover and learner of music my entire life. I have been singing longer than I can remember. I began playing clarinet at the age of 10, and continue to play today in a community band. After teaching 4th-8th Grade Band for 4 years, I have made the switch to classroom and vocal music. I now teach 3rd-8th Grade Music and Choir, and have been doing so for the past two years. I truly feel that this is where I need to be in my teaching career, and find myself feeling incredibly fulfilled with my current job.

In addition to teaching full time, I am currently enrolled in the Master's Program at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, IL. I am finishing my first summer of residency (second summer overall), and after this summer session is over, will only have 12 credits to go! I received my undergraduate degree in Music with an Instrumental concentration, and am getting my Masters of Music degree with a Vocal concentration.

So the purpose of this blog...well, besides being pressured by certain educators out there (you KNOW who you all are!), I wanted to write about issues that I'm facing as an educator and grad student, as well as thoughts that are out there and what I'm doing in my own classroom and classes. This blog space will change and grow as I continue to grow as an educator, student, musician, and lover of music!

Well, time to get back to writing my essay and paper!

~Jen
aka Clarinet_Jen
